No matter where you are in your gender identity journey, the questions seem endless.
And then, there are all the big picture questions.
Plus, maybe you don’t necessarily want to transition. Maybe you see yourself as gender fluid or gender nonconforming but not necessarily trans. Then what? Will you fit in anywhere?
This group is for transgender, gender non-binary, and gender fluid teens ages 14-17. Here we offer a place to express fears, confusions, concerns, hopes, or excitement and to support each other through this journey of self-discovery and self-affirmation. We can learn from each other about what it means to be who we are. We are a safe space to connect around all aspects of gender while working on social skills, social identity, and getting clearer about our personal identities.
A note for parents who are struggling to know how to support their child:
It’s hard to be different. All the evidence demonstrates that getting support is crucial in psychological well being for trans and non binary youth. Young transgender and non-binary people that are supported have lower levels of anxiety and depression and this saves lives. If you are you concerned your child doesn’t have the support they need to feel strong and confident being transgender or non-binary, this group can help.
The group is co-lead by Levi Stolove, LMSW and Nicole Belletti, MA and PhD Candidate in Clinical Psychology.
Levi’s passion is to help individuals live authentic lives free of the unnecessary limitations we humans often put on ourselves. He has worked with queer youth for many years; helping LGBT+ youth create connections, gain greater internal strength and become actualized energized “adults”. He was appointed and served on the Transgender Civil Rights Implementation Task Force in San Francisco, he has lectured for CUAV (Community United Against Violence) where he led discussions groups in class rooms about what it means to be a person who is LGBT+, Levi worked at the LGBT Community Center Youth Program in NYC and led various groups both therapeutic and activist oriented.
Nicole considers herself a long time ally of of the LGBTQ+ community. She has a lot of professional experience working with genderqueer folx, in addition to having quite a few non-binary and trans friends. She is eager to offer an ally’s perspective on these struggles, and is a warm compassionate (and funny) clinician. She loves working with kids and teens and is well-attuned to the trauma so many kids go through as they struggle to grow up and become the amazing unique adults they were meant to be.
- Coming out to yourself, friends, family, dates
- Making decisions about transitioning
- Convincing your parents its a good idea
- Navigating the world with your gender identity, maybe feeling different and isolated
- And, what about… dating? Or… sex? And… bathrooms?
And then, there are all the big picture questions.
- Is it your job to explain about being trans and to help non-trans people to understand it?
- How do you grow into a happy adult as a trans-teen, and what do you want that to look like?
- Will you pass, do you want to pass, should you try to pass?
- Will your parents ever get it?
- Will you ever stop feeling different and weird?
